 SECOND EIGHT/SECOND QUAD

Last year SASRU created a new race at championship regattas as one of many methods to develop schools rowing. It is appreciated that (generally speaking) a second eight boys crew and a second quad girls crew will usually be , at best, the ninth fastest crew in the event. In order to level the playing fields and give these crews an opportunity to compete against other second crews (their true peers) and not against their own first crews (who they know are faster) the “Seconds” race was established and competitors now earn points for their school. This event however does not earn Championship gold, silver and bronze medals, special "Seconds" medals are awarded, which usually would not qualify a crew for school’s colours or honours awards, depending on individual school policy.

Members of the SASRU Committee decided to re-institute the SASRU Development Fleet run so successfully in the past by Tom Price in order to support new member schools to enter the sport.

At present there are possibly 4 schools who wish to start rowing!

All schools (and clubs) are requested to donate (or sell at a nominal price) unwanted boats to SASRU who will then have them refurbished and sell them to these new members at a price to cover costs. Macarbi Racing has kindly agreed to be a partner in this endeavor.

If you have such boats in your fleet PLEASE email us asap!

ROWING FOR "YOUR" SCHOOL/S AND/OR CLUB/S - A RESTATED SASRU RULE

Rowers enrolled at a rowing school may not compete for any other school or club unless that rower has written approval from the SASRU executive which written approval shall not be given, unless there had been a written approval from the Head of that rower’s school;

Rowers enrolled at a non rowing school may not compete for a rowing school but only for a club unless that rower has written approval from the SASRU executive.

This rule was confirmed by the SASRU AGM at the 2009 SA Schools Champs.

In addition at the AGM it was decided that rowers would NOT be required to carry ID cards but that each School should have a set of cards in case of a query from an official or another School.

These rules will be applied at all SASRU and School regattas.

U16 PROVINCIAL SQUAD

The SASRU Committee has decided that from this season provincial selections, which up to now have been limited to the Open age group, should also include U16s!

The proposed boat classes are the 4 and 2X for boys and 4X for girls, although a girls 2- may be included as a consequence of the qualification of a girls 2- for the Youth Olympics.

SASRU CHAMPS: PROGRESSIONS

Consequent upon the issue of "progressions" raised at SA Champs, the committee decided that the current system will stay in place for the 2009/10 season.

We would request that all members  (who wish to) submit an alternative to the current system for consideration at the AGM to be held at 2010 SA Schools Champs.

Thereafter this matter will be investigated in depth and any changes will be made long before the 2011 Champs.

SA CHAMPS: POINTS

At the SASRU Plenary held at St Andrews School for Girls on the 18 September 2009 it was agreed to change the award of points at Championship regattas. From this season every boat in an A Final will receive points and the points will increase up the age groups as well as being weighted in favour of the bigger boats.

This the committee believes will encourage teamwork, school spirit as well as being in line with the objectives of SASRU and general education principles.

The new points system is posted on the "SASRU Rules" page!
